I was flipping channels last night and came across a movie that I had wanted to see in the theater but never got a chance. It was Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The movie was based on a comic book series of the same name and while it depicts a lot of the comics adventures, obviously it is not all of them.
It's safe to say that the movie wouldn't have won any awards for acting, but in regard to sound design, production design and special effects, they could have been a contender. I didn't look it up to verify if they were or not but since I don't remember them getting nominates in any of those categories, let's just figure they weren't.
The story is a semi love story and a semi "coming into one's own" as a person story. It focuses on Scott Pilgrim and his quest to gain the affections of Ramona. However, in order to do so, he must defeat each of her evil exes - not ex-boyfriends, exes (since she once dated a girl). From the first battle on, Scott gains confidence in not only his fighting abilities, but also himself as a person and he realizes just how bad of a person he is for dumping another girl so he could date Ramona.
It's a fun movie (as long as you don't think too much) because it reminded me of days at the video arcade playing all manner of fighting games and hoping to win. Granted, winning those games didn't get me the girl nor does it have to at all. It's one of those movies where if you suspend any thoughts of reality, you'll actually enjoy it and you might even laugh at a few parts.
There's no need to spend money on renting this one. Like I said, I was flipping channels and it came on, so I got lucky there. Maybe you can get lucky and find it on television like I did. If not, and you do want to see it, I guess you'll just have to rent it. Though, I think you can rent it on Amazon or through iTunes for a lot cheaper than at Blockbuster.
Until tomorrow.
