Renting Versus Owning

Sometimes I think back to the times when I rented an apartment and I thought, "I really wish I could own a home."  And now that I do own a home, sometimes I think, "I wish I rented."  So why the sudden change?  Owning a home is not all that it can be cracked up to be.

Examples:

Renting:

When you rent an apartment and the washer doesn't seem to work you can call the landlord and have them check it out.  For free.

Owning:

When you own a home and the washer doesn't work, you have to either look on the Internet to find a solution, call someone that might be able to help you for free or call a repair person that ends up costing you anywhere upwards of $50, depending on what needs to be fixed and what parts are required and if there are any labor costs.

Renting:

When the trash compactor (yes, I know it's called a disposal) is not working no matter what you do, you call the landlord and someone comes and fixes it (or replaces it) for free.

Owning:

When the trash compactor stops working, you have to ask a bunch of people for advice other than the advice already found on the Internet in hopes that something will get it working before you have to actually call someone to have to replace the thing.
Renting:

Every year when you are renewing your lease, some companies will offer you a free carpet cleaning.
Owning:

If you want to get your carpet cleaned, not only do you have to pay for it but it will cost more because you  have more carpet to clean.

I could go on, but you see my point.  As much as I love owning a home there are times when I just wish I could call a landlord and have them take care of everything within a couple of days and I woudn't have to worry about it or make sure that I was home during the certain four hour window that the repair person might show up.  Oh well.  At least someone is coming.
And, just for the fun of it, I've decided to add a little poll to this blog entry.  If there are any responses, more polls might show up in the future.

Until tomorrow.

Which would be better? Renting and getting things done for you? Or owning and having to do everything yourself?
