I have a feeling that I wrote about this last year around this time, but who's to say I didn't? Either way, with one game of the MLB season in the books, I can still accept the fact that the DBacks are going to be contenders, not just for the pennant, but quite possibly in the World Series.
Tonight's game against the Giants was a great match up on paper. One of the best young pitchers against Ian Kennedy. Tim Lincecum is a great pitcher and after the first inning tonight, he proved it. Well, at least until he got into some more trouble in the fifth inning. But that's not to say he's not great. He managed to shut down the Diamondbacks for four plus innings, striking out seven in the process. And yet, he took the hard luck loss. Mostly because his team couldn't catch up to the Diamondbacks in time. Yes, the final score was 5-4, but I think the Diamondbacks put this game away when they knocked Lincecum out of the game in the fifth.
The Giants just don't have enough bats in their lineup. They have some speed and a couple of guys that will give them the long ball, but the rest are simply 90 foot guys. Singles hitters. A double here and there. But for the most part, it's not enough offense, which leaves the great pitching staff in a rough place. Even if they only give up one run, there's a good chance - just like last year - that their own offense won't be able to get that one run (and then add to it) back. Good luck Giants fans.
Then again, they could surprise me this year. Buster Posey is back to full health after missing all of last year. Plus a few new players could help spark the offense. Right. The Diamondbacks, though defending NL West winners, won't go quietly into the night and will not allow a team like the Giants to take the West without a fight. This is going to be a great year and it's starting already.
Go DBACKS!
Until tomorrow.
