To make up for yesterday (and because I felt a little better), I have decided to write a second blog for today. This way, I'll still have sixteen in sixteen days.
This evening's blog refers to a group of people at my work that is built on encouraging exercise. The point: move for minutes. It doesn't matter what type of exercise that you do, simply that you do it and that you keep a log of how long you exercise. The program lasts for ten weeks during each quarter.
I joined the program at the beginning of the year as a way to force myself to exercise. And exercise I did. Sure, there were plenty of weeks that I couldn't work out as much as possible, but then there were others where we went shopping all day and walked. Remember, it doesn't matter what you do, just as long as you're moving. It could be wandering Disneyland for six hours or just working out for two.
There is a small prize at the end of the quarter (think dollar store merch) for each participant and a small party. But the prizes aren't the big deal. The big deal is making sure you lead the pack each week. Yes, folks, it's all a contest to see who can move the most. There are some people that end up with over five hundred minutes each week - these are older faculty members that have nothing better to do. And then there are others that can barely scrape over one hundred (sometimes that was me).
No matter what, the program is a great way to encourage exercise, like I said. It's fun to see who is doing how much and a way to suggest that someone do more or less exercise based on their counts for the week and how it compares to the rest of the group. Not that they brag or anything. Okay, they kind of do, but it's all in good fun.
Now, get out there and exercise. Or at least try to.
Until tomorrow.
