Well, it's almost happened. We almost have all of the furniture we ordered and that includes the baby furniture also. However, we ran into a small snag. Now, before I get into it, let me just say that sometimes I think that any sort of customer service is not really out to help, but simply make things easier for the company they serve.
A dresser was delivered to us today and, because the delivery man couldn't help me carry it upstairs (and this turned into a blessing), I decided to open it up and see what I could do about carrying it upstairs in pieces. However, as soon as I opened up the box - and it is a very large box; think refrigerator, just a bit smaller - I discovered a piece of the dresser was broken. Well, of course, I'm not going to keep it when it's broken and I'm also not going to continue unpacking it since I now need to send it back.
So I called Babies R Us to let them know. They simply passed the buck and told me to contact the manufacturer. I called them and they said there was a replacement part for the dresser that I could have sent to me and with the turn of a few screws, replace the broken piece. However, the person said that it was backordered until October. This baby is coming in September sometime and I kind of would like to have a dresser in the baby's room before then. So I told him that was not a viable option and he passed the buck again and told me to contact Babies R Us and tell them that I needed to return the damaged product.
Upon calling their customer service (for what it was worth) once again, I explained the situation and they told me that if I could get the item back to Babies R Us, they would have to receive the item back in their warehouse and then could give me a Gift Card for the same amount for me to repurchase the dresser. Did I mention this was a dresser? Made of wood? And weighing 185 pounds? And did I mention I have a four door car? So, how am I supposed to bring it back to the store? So they had to create a UPS ticket and then had the audacity to tell me to "take it to your local UPS store". Again, I reiterated the fact that that would be impossible, to which the customer service representative said she would create a call ticket and UPS will come in the next 3-5 days. She also said that I could leave it out on my porch. What? I trust my neighbors and all, but I'm not leaving a dresser on my front porch.
Needless to say, eventually Joanna managed to get the company to relent and offer a straight exchange (which is what I had attempted to do earlier - maybe she pulled the pregnancy card on them) and UPS will still have to come get the damaged dresser and bring another one. Ugh. So that was the dresser.
But wait, there's more. Our crib also arrived today and I was afraid to open it in case of any damage. I even managed to get the UPS driver to assist me in carrying it upstairs and all I had to do was give him a glass of water. See, it never hurts to ask a UPS driver if you need something heavy moved. You might just have to pay them off with water. After inspecting the crib, I found no problems and started to put it together. Let me just tell you that there are a lot of parts involved in a crib. Who knew. And wait, if you keep reading, you'll find out that our dining table finally arrived.
It's a nice dark wooden finish with six chairs so now when we have a dinner party, we can actually fit everyone around the table. Of course, if we invite more than six, the others will have to sit at the kid's table in the kitchen - sometimes that's the more fun table anyway.
And, as if all of these deliveries weren't enough, our changing table arrived at the Babies R Us store. Luckily, we have some nice friends that are willing to let us borrow the space in their SUV in order to bring it home. Of course, we have to thank them by paying for dinner, but still, it's better than me trying to fit the changing table into my little car.
Until tomorrow.
