This is All Star Week for Baseball. This is the time where the best players (as chosen by the fans) get together at some stadium and just have fun for three days. Of course, there are plenty of other players (those not chosen by the fans) that simply look at these three days as a mini vacation in the middle of the season.
All Star Week consists of several events. The Futures Game - which pits several young prospects from each team's farm system and has them play yet ANOTHER game against each other. Of course, some of these prospects are at different levels of the Minor League system, so I suppose it is something different than just a regular game.
On the Monday of All Star Week is the Home Run Derby. This year, there were actually players there that deserved to be there, such as David Ortiz (and if you didn't watch the HRD, then close your eyes - he won), Corey Hart (not the singer) and I'll even say that Chris Young deserved to be there. Actually, the Diamondback that should have been chosen to the All Star team should have been Mark Reynolds, but he wasn't, so he wasn't allowed to participate. Oh well.
The Celebrity All Star Softball Game is usually next and is a load of fun. They usually will get seven to ten former baseball players on a team with several celebrities that range from good players (James Denton) to terrible players (Jimmy Kimmel) to athletes from other sports that aren't too bad (Jerry Rice). It is always an experience to watch on televison and they look like they have a lot of fun. They are supposed to follow the official rules of softball, but it's usually a good bet that most of the rules get thrown out the window after about fifteen minutes.
Finally, on Tuesday, is the Main Event - the actual All Star Game. This year it's in Anaheim. And I know what you're thinking - why didn't you go? I can tell you. I'm saving my one trip to an All Star Game for next year - when it's in Arizona. And no matter what some supporters of a certain Arizona law claim, Major League Baseball will not force the All Star Game from Arizona and will hold it there as planned. I've read some protests about that law saying that MLB should not allow a game that brings together baseball to be held somewhere that is not only tearing families apart, but the state itself. Here's what I have to say to those people - deal. MLB has denied the All Star Game from Arizona for at least five years and they will finally get it in 2011. They should have gotten it several years ago before MLB changed the rules on which city to choose. But now it's almost here. And while I have to wait for tomorrow's game and the rest of this miserable season for the Diamondbacks to be over, I can rest assured knowing that MLB will hold it's All Star Game one year from now in Phoenix, Arizona.
Until tomorrow.
