Prom Season = Money, Money, Money

Prom is such a different experience nowadays.  From elaborate dates to elaborate ways to ask a girl out to even fancier parties to the fact that Disney made a movie about the whole event (see IMDB).  Maybe the fact that I didn’t ever have a date to my Prom when I was in high school affected the way that I see Prom now, but maybe it just made it easier.  Maybe I was saved the agony of asking girl after girl to Prom and being rejected.  Maybe it saved me having to deal with finding a restaurant that wasn’t too expensive and that the girl liked and wouldn’t end up being too messy for the girl in her pretty dress.  Also, maybe I saved myself the problem of having to rent a tux that would cost a lot of money and that I would only use that one night.  Top it off with purchasing a corsage and then a possible limo ride and professional pictures.  That’s a lot of money.  Looking back now, maybe I was just fine not attending my Prom in high school.

So what has prompted this blog entry about Prom?

This morning on my way to work, I was listening to Ryan Seacrest on KIIS FM.  A young man called in asking for Ryan’s assistance to ask a girl to Prom.  All of the other boys who asked their dates to Prom should bow down to this kid.  Not only did he manage to get Ryan to ask the girl for him, but he did it on NATIONAL RADIO!  And then, as if that wasn’t enough for this kid, Ryan decided to pay for the kid’s tux, dinner at Cheesecake Factory AND tickets for a concert so they could have a date night (unsure if the concert was actually for the same night as Prom, but still).  If Ryan was on the air back when I was going to Prom maybe he could have helped me out, too.  Maybe.
But that’s not the point.  The point really (and I talked about this a few blog entries ago when Joanna and I saw kids at Disneyland dressed for Prom) is that Prom is expensive, no matter if it was when I was going to school or even now.  And for Ryan Seacrest to be willing to spend his company’s money to send this couple to Prom, that’s great.  The company obviously has plenty of money floating around (as does Ryan, if you think about it).

Well, good luck to all those students going to Prom.  On one hand, I envy you for being able to enjoy something that I wasn’t able to as a high-schooler.  And yet, on the other hand, I don’t envy all the stuff that both genders will have to go through to make it a fun night for either of them.

Until next time.
