Okay, I watched something this morning and I couldn't resist linking to it. It might make you cry, it might not. Regardless, watch it and get a different perspective of parents.
Before I get to that, though, let me give you a little background. Neil Gaiman is a jack of all trades. He is an incredible writer and has an imagination that most people only dream about - though, granted, based on some of his writings, people might have nightmares. For reference, the movie Coraline is based on a story of his. As was Stardust (though I don't think that was a scary movie). Neil has also written for television and movies along with the dozens of comics and novels that he has produced over the years.
I've known who Neil Gaiman was for a while now and never really paid much attention to him. Not that I didn't like his work, it was more just a preference. However, he wrote an episode of one of my favorite shows, Doctor Who, that aired this past weekend. After watching that episode, I wanted to know a little bit more about him, so I went to the Internet.
I was on his blog today reading a post from over a week ago, in which he was feeling particularly parental, speaking about his daughter growing up. He then mentioned a video, which is below, and how it made him just a little sadder after hearing it.
The video is for a song, Because the Origami, that Neil co-wrote with his wife and Ben Folds (without the Five). It's a beautiful and haunting song and the lyrics, coupled with the video, make you think. The video itself was produced by someone not affiliated with Neil Gaiman, but was simply a fan.
Maybe it's because I'm a dad now and I wonder exactly what Abby is going to be interested in and if I'm going to be able to tolerate it. I can hope and wish that she'll take after Joanna or I in regards to hobbies or sports, but who knows? After listening to this song, I think I'm going to accept whatever Abby does (unless it's soccer) and support her no matter what.
Until next time.
